| 7. TOXICOLOGY |
|
(a) EFFECTS OF ACUTE EXPOSURE
Skin Contact: commercial products containing this substance
may irritate, causing redness no reported effect from people
exposed to the pure substance
Skin Absorption: not known – there is no evidence
for more than minor skin absorption of this product
Eye Contact: non-specific irritant (as inert
dust)
Inhalation: commercial products containing this substance
may cause asthma, however there has been no reported effect
from people (workers) exposed to the pure substance
Ingestion: somnolence, tremor, ataxic gait reported
from animal testing; no human symptoms reported from workplaces
using this product
Note: : extreme bitterness of product makes
ingestion highly unlikely!
(b) EFFECTS OF CHRONIC EXPOSURE
General: no information – no adverse effects reported
Sensitizing: no information – no adverse
effects reported
Carcinogenic: not a known carcinogen or tumorigen
Reproductive Effect: no known effect in humans or animals
Synergistic With: not known
Estimated LD50: 508mg/kg (oral, rabbit),
584mg/kg (oral, rat), 850mg/kg (oral guinea pig)
Estimated LC50: not known

| 8. PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT |
|
Hands: not required unless prolonged contact is likely
- then use any impermeable substance
Eyes: safety glasses with side shields or chemical
goggles
Respirator: local ventilation to control dust preferable
to respirator; if not possible, dust/mist filter on a respirator
Clothing: no special garments recommended
NOTE: dust can penetrate clothing and be held in contact
with skin for prolonged periods! Wash thoroughly after handling.

| |
| 9. ENVIRONMENT |
Leak Precaution: dyke to control spillage and prevent environmental
contamination
Fire Potential - a spark or extremely hot surface could ignite
dust.
Dust control measures recommended.
Handling Spill: ventilate contaminated area; sweep carefully
to collect, pick up using non-sparking aluminium or plastic
shovels, and store in closed containers for disposal.
Waste Disposal: do not flush to sewer; may be incinerated
in approved facility; dump in sanitary landfill if local regulations
permit
Bioaccumulation: product is biodegradable and is not
known to bioaccumulate.
Biodegradation: not known |
| |
| 10. STORAGE & HANDLING |
Store and use in a cool dry environment, away from sources of
ignition, heat and oxidizing agents. Use with good ventilation
or other means to control dust. Although this product is not
considered flammable, if dust is generated, take care to avoid
sparks - use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof electrical
equipment nearby. Do not cut, drill, weld or grind on or near
this container. Avoid prolonged contact with skin and wash work
clothes frequently. An eye bath and safety shower should be
available near the workplace. Although this product is moderately
toxic by mouth, its extremely bitter taste makes accidental
ingestion highly unlikely!
NOTE: Workplace dust control is important to
minimize workers' exposure to this product. Workers should also
wash hands and face with soap and water after handling this
substance to ensure that the product's bitter taste does not
appear in their food. If exposed to product dust, shower thoroughly
after work. |
| |
| 11. FIRST AID |
|
SKIN: Wash with soap and plenty of water. Remove contaminated
clothing and do not reuse until thoroughly cleaned or laundered.
EYES: Wash eyes with plenty of water, holding eyelids
open. Seek medical assistance promptly if there is irritation.
INHALATION: Remove from contaminated area promptly.
CAUTION: Rescuer must not endanger himself! If breathing stops,
administer artificial respiration and seek medical aid promptly.
INGESTION: Unlikely route of exposure due to extremely
bitter taste of product. Give plenty of water to dilute product.
Do not induce vomiting (NOTE below). Keep victim quiet. If
vomiting occurs, lower victim's head below hips to prevent
inhalation of vomited material. Seek medical help promptly.
NOTE: Inadvertent inhalation of vomited material may
seriously damage the lungs. The risk and danger of this is
greater than the risk of poisoning through absorption of this
product. The stomach should be emptied under medical supervision,
after the installation of an airway to protect the lungs.
